Golf – 100% Raw

Naked golf enthusiasts will once again experience the exhilaration of playing 100% Raw in the Nude Golf International being held at the scenic Wairau Valley Golf Course in Marlborough, New Zealand.

Wairau Valley is only 30 minutes drive from Blenheim on State Highway 63 towards the Nelson Lakes and the West Coast. Wai-natur Naturist Park, hosts of this major event on the naturist calendar, is only a few minutes walk from the golf course.

Golfers teeing off in the buff at 9:00am on Sunday 12^th February may expect full bar facilities throughout the Ambrose tournament, with lunch provided during the day. The Club have granted Wai-natur exclusive use of the nine hole course and will also provide a tournament organiser to ensure the rules of golf are adhered to. This is “serious fun”.

Owners of Wai-natur Naturist Park, Kay Hannam and Brian Williams have organised a number of successful golf tournaments at the Lake Tekapo Golf Club, in conjunction with the annual “Mackenzie Muster Naturist Festival” and since re-locating to Marlborough in 2006 have focussed their attention on the scenic course in Wairau Valley.

With facilities similar to other holiday parks, Wai-natur has a fabulous heated pool for skinny-

dippers. Guests can choose from two guest rooms for bed & breakfast accommodation in Kay and Brian’s spacious home set among five acres of beautiful garden. Well established trees provide a restful canopy while strolling naked around the property. Located in the camping area is a cabin with ensuite and onsite vans for accommodation, with a number of powered and non-powered sites. Toilets, hot showers and a communal ‘rec room’ with kitchen and barbecue area complete the camping options. Guests who also like to exercise in the nude may choose from a range of fitness equipment with a long leisurely soak in the outdoor spa or bath topping off a great day.

“Foodies” will also be catered for on the day prior to the event, with the annual “Nudie Foodies Sounds Adventure” in the Marlborough Sounds, culminating with an evening meal prepared by the “Nudie Foodies” in the garden at Wai-natur.

Check in at Wai-na tur on the evening of Friday 10^th February for the “mix and mingle” alongside the pool. Stay overnight before leaving by car to drive through the vineyards in Wairau Valley and meet MV Odyssea moored at the Havelock Marina by 10:00am.

Your skipper will take you on a cruise through Queen Charlotte Sound, mooring at a secluded area to swim or just laze around in the sunshine. Lunch will be provided and while it is okay to bring your own drinks for offshore use, a bar license applies while on the vessel. You can expect around 30 to 40 other “nudie foodies” to cruise with you in this super launch, chartered exclusively for the “Nudie Foodie Sounds Adventure”

Wairau Valley - Best little valley in the world!

It's true. The Wairau Valley would have to be the best little valley in the world. Having been in Auckland for a week during the NZNF Rally with incessant rain most days, I was pleased to return home. Not that I didn't have a great time up there seeing many of my old friends. I don't know which night was the most entertaining; the Opera Restaurant, Fairytale Circus New Year's Eve Ball or the Moulin Rouge evening. They were all great fun and I can't wait to go to the next naturist festival in Wellington next summer.
Back to the weather which has been absolutely wonderful here. Sure we have had the occasional rainy day or should I say night. We don't appear to get the extremes of weather here in the valley, and pat ourselves on the back for finding such a great spot here in Marlborough.
So what are you waiting for? Pack up the tent or caravan and head off to the Top of the South for a great summer holiday. Treat yourselves to bed & breakfast or a weekend in our ensuite cabin or onsite caravans. No crowds, no stress... no clothes!

Fine and Sunny All The Way

With the Top of the South hitting the news lately we wanted to reassure you that Marlborough hasn’t been affected by the deluge of rain that dampened the spirits of our neighbours in the Nelson Tasman regions.

We are happy to report that the Top of the South is open for business, the forecast for Marlborough’s Christmas holidays is fine and sunny. According to the Met Service, the ten day forecast for Blenheim is dry with little wind all the way through to 29 December.

So grab your hat and sunnies, fill your chilly bin with some great Marlborough wine and head to your favourite holiday spot at Wai-natur Naturist Park. The Marlborough Sounds and all the wonderful open spaces in this beautiful region are ready and waiting for you.

Marlborough Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Awards

What a terrific night we all enjoyed during the Business Excellence Awards held held last Friday 18 November, at the Marlborough Events Centre in Blenheim. Welcomed with a cool glass of bubbly and delicious canapes and an opportunity to meet and greet with other entrants (as excited as we were); Marlborough Chamber of Commerce board members, sponsors and judges.

No sooner had we consumed our entree then the spot prizes and the first of the awards were presented. You can imagine the increased heart-rate when we heard the presenter read out the name of the runner-up for the small business award - Wai-natur Naturist Park. I just could not remove the smile on my face before, during or after my acceptance speech.

As if that wasn't enough excitement for the evening; following the main course further awards were announced and included the joint winners of the Environmental Award: Clubs of Marlborough and......drum roll.... Wai-natur Naturist Park. Wow! Unbelievable! The smile was still there and I was too excited to be nervous as I accepted the award on behalf of our great team pictured above.

We naturists are environmental pioneers. The most significant factor in reducing our 'carbon footprint' is choosing not to wear clothes. This means that we dispense with one of the most environmentally damaging components of our day to day consumerism - those fashionable short-lived clothes, as well as the associated laundry water and chemicals. "The naturist philosophy is based on respect: respect for ourselves, respect for each other and respect for the environment." It was extremely satisfying to note these last comments quoted in the Marlborough Express.

Here is another photo to let you see the awards and the smile on my face following the presentation(s).... and yes, I am all dressed up for the night. Apparently others were wondering what we naturists would wear to the black tie event. Would I be wearing tassels on my nipples? Brian (tongue in cheek), said he would normally wear a black tie to any 'formal' occasion.

It was such fun getting dressed up to the nines. We are realistic to acknowledge it's all a matter of "time, place and circumstance".

Ever tried to skinny-dip down a moonbeam? Well now you have the opportunity to do just that at a beach near you on Wednesday 8th February. Nature will create the ideal setting with a full moon, a clear sky, high tide and a balmy breeze blowing.

I first met Stephane Deschenes in Sweden during the 1998 INF World Congress, since then we have communicated on several occasions. Eight years later our paths crossed again in Spain and, as before, I was inspired by his naturist philosophy. I am delighted to bring you one of Stephane’s recent articles originally published in Going Natural.

One of our own “inspiring naturists” - Joyce Fleming - once again put herself at risk to face the media; this time “Playing Favourites” with Kim Hill on RadioNZ. We have also re-printed some of the responses to the programe as well as information on how to purchase her telling memoir: Defying Convention.

With the international focus on New Zealand during the Rugby World Cup it was only a matter of time before creative journalists began seeking out stories with little to do with rugby. As a result Naturism in New Zealand has enjoyed an earlier than usual summer interest from a variety of media, preceding national promotion during gonatural week.

For eight weeks and two days on the road and around seven thousand kilometres, Arnold and Carol Price went to Bluff in the buff and back - sustaining floods, earthquakes, storm, tempest, minor sunburn, not forgetting good food, wine and company. Their travels regularly punctuated with wonderful conversations hearing many fascinating accounts of life histories and personal anecdotes but that is another story.

You saw it on the cover of gonatural! Three nudist number plates. Will Fraser brings us another 4WD travelogue taking us through the Hurunui, on up to the Rainbow and Molesworth and ending at Wairau Valley. Once you have read this you will want to see these spectacular regions for yourselves.

Wai-natur 5th Birthday Weekend

What a way to celebrate our 5th birthday with a win from the All Blacks! Most would agree it was far more intense than our inaugural Petanque tournament on the new piste. But lots of fun though.

Another memorable moment was our first swim in the pool. It was soooo good to be able to do a few lengths (well 60 was a good start).

Everyone else has "Happy Hour" - here at Wai-natur we had "Merry Moments" which went on decidedly longer than the usual hour and was even more merry, judging by the numbers wearing weird and wonderful 'sunnies'.

Everyone finally sat down for a communal feast much later than planned, but happily cleaned up in time for the 'big game'.

We had the biggest number of visitors here at Wai-natur during Labour Weekend this year than ever before and great to see many familiar faces. Thank you for making our weekend so special.

Normalising Nudity

Spring is just around the corner

It snowed in Wairau Valley last week - 'valley people' tell me that it hasn't snowed here for almost twenty years. Nud was simply estatic and thought he was back in Lake Tekapo. Although I think the brave daffodils may have confused him.

These past few days have been in complete contrast, so I have made the most of the opportunity to do some gardening in the nude. I can't wait to get the pool warmed up and get back into my daily 'K'.

It won't be long before we see some of your own smiling faces - and bare bodies - here at Wai-natur.

Pete Whalan, President NZNF feels it's time for the NZNF to step up and tap into the resources the internet offers and to utilise social media such as Facebook, Twitter and blogs. Good news also for members of NZNF as gonatural goes digital with this issue (if all goes according to plan). Glenne Findon, Communications NZNF brings you news about this year's gonatural week which begins on 21st October.

Those who dived into the freezing Pacific ocean 100% Raw during the annual Polar Bare Plunge were lured with the promise of mulled wine following their quick dip. Of course there are many wonderful articles about naturism in this full colour issue including features about Scandinavia and a natural paradise in Croatia.

My attention was directed to an item on www.stuff.co.nz about The Raelian Movement.

Wai-natur continues to enjoy warm temperatures

Unlike many other parts of the country, Wairau Valley in Marlborough continues to enjoy warm, temperatures and lovely sunny days. It just makes sense to get out in the garden au naturel and to pick the remainder of the masses of peaches and apples on the trees. The autumnal glow all around us now that the leaves are turning serves to remind us that winter is on its way. Sure we have the occasional early frost, but you can bet that the rest of the day will be lovely and clear. So if you have nothing on... come and spend some time with us. We are open until after Easter.

Brian, the proverbial 'squirrel' in the family, has been cooking up delicious pumpkin soup, preserving beans, peaches, relish and jams. So there will be no shortage of food in the deep freeze and in the cupboards while he is swanning around France. Yes, he is off again, the 'bag boy' also; while Nud and I hold the fort. Time for me to immerse myself with the backlog of writing and reading. With masses of firewood in the shed, Wai-natur will be a pretty good place to spend the winter.

Simple Living Workshop

Sustainable living ‘expert’ Rhys Taylor and Wai-natur’s Kay Hannam have teamed up to offer New Zealand’s ultimate clean and green holiday experience. No dress-code (save a fortune on High Street fashion), learn practical skills; swap ideas on bargain-hunting, and on gardening with nature as your helper.

Rhys has an MSC in natural resource management and certificate in continuing education (for those who rate qualifications), plus a decade’s experience writing and teaching sustainable living courses, mostly in Canterbury.

He runs a large organic garden, orchard and bush restoration project, and has built an eco-house, with his partner, that is mostly solar-heated, so he’s a “walk the talk” sort of guy, although less experienced as a naturist.

The weekend workshop begins on Friday 4th November and is suitable for adults aged sixteen and over. No special previous skills or knowledge are required, so do come with an open mind. Notes will be provided.

Nude Photography Workshop

Photographers - join us for another weekend on Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th November 2011 for a two day nude photography workshop based at the beautiful grounds of Wai-natur Naturist Park. This workshop will focus on "nude recreation" and we are looking for a naturist couple to be our models for the weekend.

Our time together begins with an evening meet and greet on Friday evening. On Saturday, tutor Roger Thwaites will offer tips for capturing compelling images with the opportunity of publishing these in gonatural magazine. Sunday is a half day shoot day, allowing time for people to travel home.

“A significant and unforgettable character” - Joyce Fleming on Norm Wilkinson who died last December. Do you remember Norm burying the time capsule along with his old blue dressing gown? Can anyone tell me in what year the time capsule was to be dug up?

Each year the NZNF presents a number of media prizes and awards at the AGM, including the best article and best photo from gonatural December 2009 through to September 2010. The Pat Trott Achievement Trophy was awarded to Joyce Fleming in recognition of her long and continuing service to naturism. Long overdue don’t you think?

The Orchard Sun Club found a new venue at the Orokonui Ecosanctuary during

gonatural week; Wellington Naturists hosted the NZ Rescue Service National Competition. Later in November, their 60th anniversary photo appeared in the Dominion Post, resulting in an interview with Sarah Bradley on TVONE’s Good Morning Show. How good is that!

A thought-provoking article reveals that a number of non-profit organisations are now admitting that sunshine is good for you; Emilie Comtet finds the slow movement of Tai chi chuan in accordance with the naturist philosophy; BOP Naturists spend a stunning weekend in Tauranga.

A Taste of the Bay - ‘Gourmet Rally’. Both front and back covers and pages 16-21 show and tell you all about the fun and games during the week long rally; plus a visit to Mangatutu Hot Springs the following day.

Bare Essentials of Nude Photography have been brought to you in an enlightening article following the inaugural workshop held at Wai-natur; plus advance notice of a Simple Living workshop, or how you can live a more eco-friendly lifestyle even if you’ve already made a start.

Not covered elsewhere in these pages, but of significant concern; is an item brought to our attention by Mike Ward, President of Free Beaches NZ. The government is quietly pushing through change in legislation on the proposed new Marine and Coastal Areas Bill, replacing the Foreshore and Seabed Act which will affect use of beaches by the public. An organisation called Coastal Coalition (www.coastalcoalition.co.nz) should be referred to for information on this very important issue which will have major repercussions for future generations.

Many of us have experienced a variety of European naturist resorts. My photo at right was taken a couple of years ago at Haut Chandelar, a delightful family naturist campsite at 1000 metres in the Cote d’Azur. Its size and numbers in sharp contrast to the huge campsites in Austria and Croatia featured in James Ferguson’s article on his own observations and thoughts of the naturism scene in Europe.

President NZNF, Ken Mercer brings you a report on the INF-FNI Congress held at Pizzo Greco in Italy and Marty Braithwaite explores the paradox that nudity in Thailand presents.

SummerFest ‘10 kicked off gonatural week and the beginning of the summer season at Pineglades Naturist Club. Gordon McKay brings us a rolling photographic essay on the installation of The Orchard's new water tank, while Carole Stewart guides us to a local treat in the guise of Sutton Salt Lake, which, like the aforementioned tank, was also full of water. In the UK, Suzanne Piper visits Butterfly World - a wonderfully colourful new venue for naturism.

‘Gardening Guru’ June Campbell-Tong is another of the ‘gems’ who spend all their spare time tending the beautiful gardens at Wellington Naturists; Further north Col Basire joins the Bay of Plenty Naturists in the warm thermal waters of Oropi Hot Pools for ‘Magical Mondays’; While in Golden Bay, Peter Finlayson brings us news of the Annual Mens Nude Gathering at Autumn Farm.

Katikati Naturist Park was one of 34 tourism companies and individuals named as finalists in the 2010 Tourism Industry Awards. The holiday park was among the winners in the 2008 awards. This years finalists came from a variety of sectors and ranged from events like Wellington’s NZI Sevens tournament to the Christchurch Casino which eventually took out the Supreme award. We congratulate Joan and Kevin Sampson on their success and extend our gratitude for the way in which naturism in New Zealand continues to gain a positive spin-off from their innovative business excellence.

You don't need to fly to the Mediterranean -

Wai-natur Naturist Park will make you feel a million miles away!

If you were planning on joining us for the Nudie Foodies Sounds Adventure in February, then I'm afraid you are too late as we are fully booked. We have a fairly cosomopolitan crew arriving, with visitors from Australia, UK and the Netherlands joining those from Aotearoa. However we would still welcome your registration for the Nude Golf International at Wairau Valley Golf Club or the Marlborough Wine Tour by luxury air-conditioned coach on Sunday 21st February.

With all this spring growth at Wai-natur, I have managed to channel a fair bit of enthusiasm into the garden, with plenty of help from Nud’s new “ball lady” and the “bag-boy”. Now that Brian is back from France we are all getting stuck into “the list” which includes restructuring the Potager. At the very least we will have fresh salad greens to celebrate his 70th birthday bash in November.

Now that the new septic tank is firmly under the ground, connections to sewered sites are a reality for long term stays. If you don’t know it already the camping area at Wai-natur offers plenty of room for large and small mobile homes, with all the facilities of a regular holiday park including several powered sites.

Much to the delight of our first guests for the season, our fabulous swimming pool is now at a very acceptable 29 degrees.

Spring is here at Wai-natur

Spring is here at Wai-natur and with that the realisation that having spent nearly every available fine day (and of course there are many) in the garden, I omitted to bring you the news about the latest fabulous issue of gonatural magazine.

Much of the content in the September edition is devoted to gaining public acceptance of naturism with Marty Braithwaite's travel blog to friends and family reporting in the same manner all the new and varied experiences of travel in Europe including visits to local naturist beaches.

Joyce Fleming throws down the towel and challenges us to celebrate the passing of the winter solstice with a national 'polar plunge'. In total contrast naturist swim nights are held fortnightly by a small number of organisations in heated pools.

Progress at Wai-natur

Having completed our fourth season here at Wai-natur, we continue to surprise ourselves with an increasing number of visitors. We truly appreciate the support given by regulars as well as newcomers. Thank you.

With a view to meeting our visitors’ expectations, Brian has been beavering away and the cabin now provides naturist accommodation with a spacious ensuite bathroom. The second portacom has been gutted and new internal partitions installed. By the time next season rolls around ‘Le Sanitaire’ will have been transformed, with showers and toilets in a convenient location alongside the ‘rec room’.

The RX Septic Tank is now below ground treating effluent in an ‘environmentally friendly’ manner. Underground piping is also provided for motorhomes requiring direct connection for waste.

Knowing that the major projects (and expenditure) are behind him, Brian is looking forward to a few months in France, then returning to get the garden ‘sorted’ in time for his ‘Big 0’. We are pictured above prior to attending the recent celebration of a friend’s birth, also in 1940.

Although winter is apparently just around the corner, we are enjoying many sunny 'autumnal' days here at Wai-natur. Marlborough is renowned for it's warm climate and this year we have not been disappointed. We have also welcomed far more visitors than previous years with many of you visiting us here before and Brian and I really appreciate your support.

World Naked Gardening Day - Saturday 8 May 2010

The next best thing to skinny-dipping is working naked in the garden. We agree with one of the founders of World Naked Gardening Day, Mark Storey, that it is just one of the coolest things to do. Brian has been beavering away completing various projects at Wai-natur, I have been completing the gonatural calendar 2010-11 so now we will be concentrating on tidying up our beautiful garden - naked of course.

Yes, I know that winter is just around the corner, but here in the southern hemisphere the leaves are changing colour and the weather has that beautiful 'autumnal' feel about it. A little 'balmy', perhaps not quite warm enough for some to swim, but definitely good for getting up a little sweat in the garden. We are so sheltered here thanks to the many established trees planted by the former owners all those years ago.

World Naked Bike Ride

On Saturday 13th March Doug Ball and I travelled over to Golden Bay, to join over 100, mostly young and naked, cyclists for the World Naked Bike Ride from Tarakohe to Pohara.

The same weekend, a group of intrepid cyclists took part in WNBR travelling over part of the Otago Central Rail Trail. Also getting out on his bike again, naked of course, was Nick Lowe. Earlier this year Nick won his appeal against a conviction for riding his bike naked. This time he had some a number of naked supporters riding with him in support of WNBR.

We must have got the recipe right with last year's "Nudie Foodies Sounds Adventure", as February's weekend was booked out long beforehand.

Fifty-one skinny dippers from Aussie, UK and various locations around New Zealand, cruised naked together in the brilliant Marlborough sunshine, skinny dipping off the Odyssea into the deep waters of the sounds, then spent a magical evening dining in the beatiful garden of Wai-natur.

One guest was heard to say: "It's hard leaving when you know you've had the best".

Cycling without clothing seems to have caught on in a big way here and I asked the question in my editorial how it was that two naked cyclists were issued with a stern warning for not wearing helmets, yet our own 'natural ahtlete' Nick Lowe was appealing a conviction for wearing one and nothing else? I am happy to read the news that Nick's appeal was successful.

Nick, his mate Possum, and thirty others, also wearing helmets, had anything but an easy ride over the Central Otago Rail Trail in early January. But then you can read it all and much more by subscribing online.

Which reminds me in a couple of weeks you can join others around the country for the southern hemisphere World Naked Bike Ride in Takaka, Hawkes Bay, Middlemarch to name a few. Check out the website worldnakedbikeride.org/ for all the info. Why not start a ride in your district and encourage others to become less dependent on oil. So get yourself out there, doin' it.

Nude Golf International Sunday 21st February 2010

Naked golf enthusiasts will once again experience the exhilaration of playing 100% Raw in the Nude Golf International being held at the scenic Wairau Valley Golf Course in Marlborough. Wairau Valley is only 30 minutes drive from Blenheim on SH63 towards the Nelson Lakes and the West Coast.
Wai-natur Naturist Park, host of this major event on the naturist calendar, is only a few minutes walk from the golf course.
Golfters teeing off in the buff at 9:00am on Sunday 21st February may expect full bar facilities throughout the tournament, and members of the golf club will have light snacks on offer during the day. The Club have granted Wai-natur exclusive use of the nine hole course and will also provide a tournament organiser to ensure the rules of golf are adhered to. This is "serious fun".
The Top of the South has the sunniest weather and Marlborough has a great deal of appeal to visitors looking for a warmer climate. With facilities similar to other holiday parks, Wai-natur has a fabulous heated pool for skinny-dippers.

Postcard from France

Kay and Brian would like to send greetings to all our naturist friends from New Zealand and around the world. We are looking forward to the summer and seeing a bit more of you (pun intended).

This year (winter) we decided to have a ‘real holiday’ and just blob out in the sun, swim, chat, read, enjoy good red wine and regional food (especially the cheese). And we have done just that. For four weeks the sun has been shining every day in Provence during our visit to our friends at Le Vallon des Oiseaux, La Haut Chandelalar and Belezy.

Finally… it rained. Well it had not done that since the 9th of June, so we can hardly complain. A good time to catch up and send you this “postcard” just to let you know Kay and Brian are fine. We have lost count of the number of books we have read. Now we are enjoying a few more days of brilliant sunshine at L’Eglantiere in the Pyranees before travelling to Mougon Thorigne. north of Bordeaux for the wedding of Xavier and Isabelle.

Bill McEwan wheeled along for World Naked Bike Ride, snapping the happy bunch of riders. Not much changes in Noosa according to Nudie Foodie Pete Whalan, while Dutch naturists Jan and Anne-Mieke Gills chose New Zealand for their dream holiday.

Will Fraser invites you to sample some more 'back yard' adventure in the beautiful Central Otago region, while Ray Coates explores the stunning scenery on the West Coast and Marlborough. Joannie and Reed from California, are guided around the upper south and lower north islands, visiting three unique naturist venues; leaving all too soon, but with some stunning photos for their holiday album.

It's always been know, to us on the Mainland at least, that Blenheim is the sunniest place in New Zealand.
